Calahan, 9787 Ridge Rd. This one-story house does not have its stones in distinct rows and its quoins are irregular length flat stones. It appears to be an early construction. Roudabush Survey page 66
"The Cobblestone Houses of Upstate New York", compiled by Dorothy Wells Pease 1941. Research done in collaboration with Hazed B. Jeffery, supplemented with material furnished by Carl F. Schmidt. Reference the thirtenth (last) paragraph on page 4.
In the nineteenth century Captain Issac Allen and three generations of Allens ran the farm. Since 1944 it has been the home of Mr and Mrs. John K Callahan.
The original cobblestone wing retains most of the original fireplaces and features. Most remarkable is the grandfather's clock built into the living room wall when the house was constructed. Its "Whiting Clock works, made in Winchester" still works.
The brick used for lintels over doors and windows, and laid directly on sand in the basement, came from neighboring brickyards.
The grounds are excellently preserved and typical of a nineteenth century farm. Two large barns, two chicken houses and a smokehouse for preserving meat are behind the house. A well has been made more picturesque with a new covering. The early cobblestone home was probably built by the same mason who built Cla-2 Crowell-Arnold House.
The structure is not mentioned in the Clarkson section of Carl F. Schmidt's book, "Cobblestone Masonry, pages 44-45.
